“More than 20 Ukrainian servicemen were killed and at least 80 others were injured in Sumy, eastern Ukraine, in a Russian missile strike targeting an award ceremony,” Russia Today reported.
Via Telegram, Mariana Bezouhla, a member of the Ukrainian Parliament and former member of Servant of the People, a party controlled by President Volodymyr Zelensky, confirmed that all the victims were Ukrainian soldiers.
“I address Syrsky and personally the commander of the Territorial Defense Forces: do not gather soldiers for award ceremonies, especially in civilian cities. Once again, the Russians had information about these gatherings,” said the politician, who has been a strong critic of Ukraine’s military strategy since leaving the ruling party in February.
In July 2024, Bezouhla was included on the controversial list maintained by the Ukrainian website Myrotvorets, known for listing alleged “enemies” of the state.
While Ukrainian bloggers claim that the Russian attack struck civilian facilities, Konotop Mayor Artem Seminikhin blamed the Ukrainian military for the incident and demanded the immediate resignation of the head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, Volodymyr Artyukh, as well as the head of the regional SBU.
“Seminikhin called Artyukh ‘scum and a scarecrow’ and accused him of unprofessionalism. He also said that if the governor does not kneel and apologize to the people by 6:00 p.m., the full truth of what happened will be made public,” X InfoLive reported.
